A fast-track, specialized training program in cardiac sonography is available at Hart College of Cardiac Sonography & Health Care Inc. in Scarborough, Ontario.The course adheres to the National Competency Profile of Accreditation Canada. Our course and clinical training prepares students for CMRITO and CACC registration examination
Sonography of the heart is often referred to as echocardiography.
Roles of Cardiac Sonography Technician:
- Captures images of the heart using high-frequency sound waves.
- Incorporates an understanding of cross-sectional cardiovascular anatomy in the practice setting.
- Assesses and interprets scans to inform diagnostic impressions.
- Integrating Electrocardiogram (ECG) principles with the cardiac cycle to interpret images and measurements.
- Upholds ethical standards of the profession and maintains professional conduct.
- Post-Secondary Certificate or Diploma:
- A graduate of a two-year registered Health Professions Diploma or Advanced Diploma Program. Examples of Diploma and Advanced Diploma Programs include, but are not limited to: Medical Radiation Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Registered Practical Nursing, Cardiovascular Technology, Registered Massage Therapy, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physiotherapy Assistant.
- Additional Academic Requirements:
- Applicants with international qualifications must provide proof of subject matter requirements as above. These applicants may be required to provide proof of language proficiency.
- Non-Academic Requirements:
- A police check of Criminal Record and/or Vulnerable Sector Screening is required for entry to the program.
- Immunization record must be produced prior to starting clinical placement. Applicants must provide proof of immunization status of Hepatitis B and annual Tuberculosis (TB) test (a Chest X-ray is required if the TB test is positive).
- Does this program train for a vocation that has entry-to-practice requirements?
- Students must graduate from an Registered/ accredited educational program to qualify to complete the Sonography Canada credentialing examinations and register with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) to be eligible to work in Ontario.
- According to the Canadian Job Bank, forecast for Cardiac Sonography 2023-2025 is favorable.
- The majority of diagnostic cardiac sonography technicians work in “accredited cardiac sonography labs”.
- Cardiac sonography technicians can also find opportunities in community and teaching hospitals, cardiology clinics, physician offices and ultrasonography manufacturing facilities.
- Program Length: 48 weeks
- Theoretical/Classroom: 28 weeks
- Practicum/Clinical: 20 weeks

Ministry of Colleges and Universities of Govt of Ontario has asked Hart College to begin enrollment in the program and offer the program.
